In Equus: Story of the Horse, anthropologist-turned-filmmaker Niobe Thompson embarks on a global journey to explore the 6,000-year-old bond between humans and horses. Filmed across 11 countries on three continents, the three-part documentary delves into how humans tamed wild horses and transformed them into over 400 specialized breeds.
In Episode 1, Origins, Thompson travels back 45 million years to meet the Dawn Horse, a tiny forest-dwelling ancestor of modern horses, brought to life with 3D animation. He explores how horses became one of the fastest animals on land through unique biomechanics and investigates their deep capacity for communication—revealing that horses use 17 facial expressions, more than dogs or chimpanzees. Alongside scientists, nomads, and horse whisperers, including Canadian cowboy Jimmy Anderson, Thompson uncovers how horses evolved to become willing partners in human history. The series blends science, adventure, and heartfelt storytelling to illuminate the enduring human-horse relationship.
