The Arizona Game and Fish Department is investigating a suspected intentional poisoning that has killed dozens of animals in Tucson. Since late January, authorities have found 32 dead coyotes, three pet dogs, three javelinas, and one raven near Pantano Wash. Officials believe the poison was placed earlier in the month and has not been added since. Based on a javelina’s analysis, investigators suspect a person laced food with poison to attract animals.
Dr. Anne Justice-Allen, a wildlife veterinarian, believes the poison could be strychnine or another fast-acting substance. Samples have been sent for testing. Dog owners hiking in the area are advised to keep pets leashed and prevent them from eating anything off the ground. Symptoms of poisoning include salivation, seizures, or sudden collapse. Anyone who sees an affected animal should contact the Arizona Game and Fish Department at 1-800-352-0700.
