The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine has established four Animal and Veterinary Innovation Centers (AVICs) to advance the goals of its Animal and Veterinary Innovation Agenda (AVIA), announced in September 2023. These centers will receive funding to enhance regulatory science and develop innovative products for animal health. The AVICs will focus on three areas: addressing highly pathogenic avian influenza and other zoonotic diseases, advancing intentional genomic alterations (IGAs) in animals, and tackling unmet Veterinary medical needs in various species.
The funded partnerships include the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which will research HPAI, and the University of California, Davis, focusing on gene editing in livestock. Kansas State University will evaluate analgesics for food animals, while the University of Arkansas will study blackhead disease in turkeys. Additionally, the Reagan-Udall Foundation will conduct a SWOT analysis to identify challenges and opportunities in animal health. The FDA aims to modernize its regulatory approaches through these initiatives.
