The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF), alongside the American Kennel Club (AKC), has announced the first recipients of the AKC/AKC CHF Canine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Program awards. Colorado State University and Penn Vet (University of Pennsylvania) have been selected through a competitive process aimed at increasing the number of specialists for athletic and working dogs. Colorado State University’s program offers a diverse caseload and strong mentorship, while Penn Vet provides a research-intensive environment.
Each school will receive $100,000 annually to support a three-year residency. The Golden Retriever Foundation’s donation has jump-started this initiative, emphasizing the growing interest in performance events. Veterinary professionals can apply through the Veterinary Internship & Residency Matching Program in spring 2025, with training starting in July 2025. This program, supported by AKC, breed clubs, and dog lovers, aims to advance veterinary medicine and canine health through innovative science and education.
