Big data is playing a growing role in improving racehorse safety through the work of Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA). Since launching its Racetrack Safety Program in 2022, HISA has required nationwide reporting of Veterinary treatments, creating a centralized database covering more than 90,000 horses. Regulatory veterinarians use this data during mandatory post-entry screening to identify potential risks before race day.
To manage the scale and complexity of the information, HISA partnered with Palantir to develop tools such as HISA Horse In-Sight and HISA CHECK√. These platforms apply machine learning to transform medical records, performance histories, and advanced metrics into actionable risk profiles. HISA CHECK√ assigns each horse a composite score based on dozens of risk factors, helping veterinarians prioritize inspections without replacing clinical judgment. HISA leadership says the technology accelerates analysis, reduces workload, and ultimately helps prevent catastrophic injuries on the racetrack.
