A new 3D printer donated to Washington State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital is transforming how complex orthopedic surgeries are planned and performed. The donation came from Dr. George Ross, an 88-year-old WSU veterinary alumnus with a long history of supporting the university. The advanced printer enables the creation of patient-specific anatomical models from CT scans, helping surgeons like Dr. Bettina Darveshi better visualize and plan surgeries—particularly for cases involving kneecap dislocation and limb deformities.
The physical models allow for more intuitive planning, reduced anesthesia time, and improved surgical outcomes. The technology will also aid in training residents through the development of arthroscopy simulation models, in collaboration with the University of Florida and Vetiqo. This marks the second printer Ross has donated to WSU. He previously gifted one to the radiology department and has established scholarships, including one for students pursuing Veterinary medical imaging, continuing his legacy of impactful support in education and innovation.
