A recent PetSmart Charities-Gallup study revealed that Veterinary care remains financially out of reach for many U.S. pet owners. Over half (52%) have skipped or declined necessary Veterinary treatment despite 97% considering pets part of the family. The survey, based on 2,498 respondents, showed financial barriers affect both low- and high-income households. Those earning under $60,000 were most likely to skip care due to affordability, while even among households earning $90,000+, a third had done the same.
Young adults, Black and Hispanic pet owners, and low-income households were disproportionately affected. Most often skipped were diagnostics and preventive care. Fourteen percent of those who avoided care saw their pet’s condition worsen or die. Many pet owners weren’t offered lower-cost options and few had access to payment plans, despite strong interest. PetSmart Charities is committing $100 million to improve care access and affordability. The findings underscore a growing need for more flexible, affordable, and inclusive Veterinary care models across the U.S.
