A young Arkansas couple, Dylan McCay and Emily Roberts, drove 330 miles to Mississippi State University’s Animal Health Center to save Maple, a 10-month-old Goldendoodle severely injured in a car accident. After discovering Maple through a social media post, the couple rescued her on a rainy Halloween night and brought her to a local vet, who recommended MSU for specialized surgery.

Maple’s injuries included open fractures to both hind femurs. Initially advised to consider amputation due to infection risks, MSU surgeons Dr. Michael Jaffe and Dr. Weston Beamon successfully reconstructed her legs during a five-hour operation using screws, pins, and bone plates. The couple used their wedding funds to cover Maple’s care, totaling nearly $15,000, and set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses. After three weeks of rehabilitation, Maple began walking again. Despite pausing their wedding plans, the couple remains committed to Maple’s recovery and their future together.
