A mysterious illness is sickening and killing Western gulls along Southern California’s coast from Malibu to Redondo Beach, prompting investigations by state and county agencies. Since July 25, International Bird Rescue has treated 17 gulls showing dehydration, paralysis, difficulty standing, and respiratory distress. Initial tests for avian influenza were negative, and officials now suspect an environmental toxin rather than a contagious disease.
Dr. Rebecca Duerr, the organization’s research and Veterinary science director, emphasized early intervention improves survival chances. Treatment includes heat support, aggressive fluid therapy to flush toxins, and supervised pool time. Birds surviving the critical period show promising recovery. JD Bergeron, International Bird Rescue’s CEO, stressed their commitment to care, funded by donations and volunteers. While a possible link to an unexplained illness in Venice canals dogs is noted, no connection is confirmed. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and L.A. County health officials continue to search for the cause.
