The Healthy Trade Initiative (HTI), in partnership with the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM), has launched the Herp Adoption Program, a national initiative providing humane surrender options for reptiles and amphibians. With reptile ownership present in about 6 million U.S. households, the program addresses a growing need for responsible rehoming and prevention of illegal or harmful releases into the wild.
Currently accepting bearded dragons, ball pythons, and amphibians, the program will expand in October 2025 to include most snake species (excluding Burmese and reticulated pythons) and additional reptiles in 2026. Each surrendered animal undergoes veterinary health checks and pathogen testing for diseases such as chytrid, ranavirus, adenovirus, and Cryptosporidium, ensuring rehomed pets are healthy. Supported by discounted overnight shipping through Redline Shipping, the program also trains future exotic animal veterinarians while promoting ecosystem protection. HTI is seeking donations to fund Veterinary care, housing, and food for surrendered pets.
