The 2014 killing of Dr. Richard Meinert, a beloved Janesville, California veterinarian, remains unsolved nearly 12 years later, and authorities are renewing calls for public assistance. Meinert, 55, was found shot once in the chest at close range inside his Thompson Peak Veterinary Clinic on June 23, 2014, following a suspected burglary the night before. Investigators believe the motive may have been theft of drugs stored at the clinic.
Meinert, who had previously experienced break-ins, reportedly went to check on the clinic and confronted one or more suspects. Toxicology reports showed no drugs or alcohol in his system. An Adidas hat with an orange logo is among the few pieces of evidence publicly disclosed. Lassen County Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Sheriff John McGarva says advances in technology are aiding the case, and officials urge anyone with information to come forward anonymously.
