Severe wildfires in western Nebraska prompted Governor Jim Pillen to declare a state of emergency across seven counties beginning March 13, 2026. Fueled by extreme winds reaching up to 70 mph and dry conditions, the rapidly spreading Morrill Fire burned hundreds of thousands of acres, reportedly traveling more than 60 miles in just hours and remaining uncontained. The fires forced evacuations in communities including Lewellen and areas around Lake McConaughey, destroying homes, ranches, fencing, and grazing land, and resulting in at least one confirmed fatality.
Dozens of fire departments and National Guard resources, including aerial support, were deployed to assist overwhelmed local responders. Livestock producers faced major disruptions during calving season, with some losing pasture and preparing to sell cattle due to lack of forage. Ongoing high winds and “Red Flag” conditions continued to hinder containment efforts. Relief efforts are underway, with donations of hay, fencing supplies, and livestock shelter being organized to support affected communities.
