Humane Colorado, formerly the Dumb Friends League, has rebranded to better reflect its commitment to animal welfare, advocacy, and community support. The 115-year-old organization continues its mission to end pet homelessness and animal suffering, while embracing innovation in sheltering, Veterinary care, and rehabilitation.
CEO Dr. Apryl Steele emphasized that the new name honors the organization’s history while eliminating confusion around the outdated term “dumb” (once used to describe animals lacking speech). The rebranding was guided by years of research, community input, and branding expertise, ensuring alignment with Humane Colorado’s mission and values.
Board chair Janice Kercheville highlighted that the new identity will support future growth and impact. Humane Colorado remains dedicated to best practices in animal welfare and is positioned for long-term leadership in improving the lives of pets, people, and communities.
