Orthobiologics are biological therapies that support a horse’s natural healing from injuries or chronic conditions like osteoarthritis. Speaking at the 2025 IGNITE Sports Science SeminarDr. Beau Whitaker emphasized their long-term benefits over conventional treatments that may cause complications with prolonged use. Veterinarians select orthobiologics based on personal experience, peer-reviewed research (often human-based), company data, and client input, factoring in timing, injury type, competition schedules, and regulatory withdrawal periods. However, ideal dosages remain unclear due to limited clinical data.
Dr. Dan Dreyfuss discussed emerging applications of orthobiologics for equine asthma. In pilot studies involving nebulized treatments, most horses showed significant improvement without adverse effects—88.2% responded positively in a larger trial. While early results are promising, Dreyfuss noted that more comprehensive research is needed to confirm efficacy and refine treatments. Both experts agree orthobiologics represent a promising frontier in equine care, with growing potential across various conditions as research progresses.
