The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has been placed on probationary accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) due to deficiencies, particularly in clinical education, echoing a similar situation from 2017. Dr. Johnny Stephens, President of OSU’s Center for Health Sciences, explained that the issues include documentation of clinical cases and facility upgrades. Despite the probation, OSU CVM graduates continue to excel, with high pass rates on licensure exams.
Interim Dean Dr. Jerry Ritchey, with support from a leadership team, is working to address AVMA concerns, including funding and facility improvements. Plans are underway to enhance the teaching hospital through OSU Vet Med Authority funding, which may involve a remodel or building a new facility. Addressing the shortage of large-animal veterinarians, particularly for rural needs, is a central focus, aligning with OSU President Shrum’s vision to elevate OSU to national prominence as a top Land Grant University.
