In Fort Collins, Colorado, residents have reported rabbits with unusual black, tentacle-like growths on their heads and faces. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) identified the cause as a virus that produces wart-like protrusions similar to benign cancerous cells. While the virus can spread among rabbits, officials say it poses no danger to humans, pets, or other wildlife. The growths generally do not harm the rabbits unless they obstruct sensitive areas like the eyes or mouth.
Locals described the growths as resembling “black toothpicks” or a “scabbiesh-looking” covering. CPW emphasized that there is no known cure, and the condition may persist for multiple years in the same animal. Wildlife officials urge the public to avoid touching or attempting to help infected rabbits, as interaction can stress the animals and potentially worsen their condition. Although not a public health threat, residents are encouraged to give affected rabbits plenty of space.
