The UK has achieved its lowest levels of multi-drug resistance (AMR) in animals since reporting began a decade ago, according to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD). Sales of critically important antibiotics for human health remain minimal, representing less than 0.5% of total Veterinary antibiotic sales. This year’s UK-VARSS report also marks 10 years of antimicrobial resistance data collection from pigs and poultry, with new data on sheep, beef, and dairy cattle.

AMR poses a significant global threat to human and animal health, food security, and economic stability, as bacteria evolve to resist antimicrobial drugs. Estimates suggest over 39 million deaths from bacterial AMR by 2050, highlighting the need to limit unnecessary antibiotic use. UK Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss emphasized the importance of collaboration among farmers, vets, and international partners to sustain progress in responsible antibiotic use and combat this One Health challenge.
