Colossal Biosciences, a Texas-based “de-extinction” company, has announced a key breakthrough in its bid to revive the dodo, extinct since the 17th century. By successfully growing pigeon primordial germ cells—precursors to sperm and eggs—the team is using gene-edited chickens as surrogates to eventually breed dodos from Nicobar pigeons, their closest relatives. The company estimates dodos could return within five to seven years, with plans to release thousands into rat-free reserves in Mauritius.
Using CRISPR technology, Colossal aims to restore genetic diversity and reintroduce the bird responsibly. Supporters see this as a milestone in genetics, while critics question whether the resulting animals can truly be considered dodos and warn the project may distract from pressing conservation needs. With over two million species currently at risk of extinction, skeptics argue de-extinction is a “dangerous” diversion. Despite the debate, Colossal has raised $10.2 billion in valuation, backed by celebrity investors, signaling enormous interest in its ambitions.
