Clemson University has broken ground on the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), marking South Carolina’s first Veterinary school and aiming to combat a critical shortage of veterinarians, especially in rural areas. Funded by a $285 million investment and a generous donation from State Senator Harvey S. Peeler Jr.—a longtime advocate and namesake of the college—the CVM will welcome its first students in fall 2026, pending accreditation.

South Carolina ranks among 22 states without a vet school, with nearly half its counties having fewer than 10 veterinarians. Clemson’s CVM will use an innovative distributed model, placing fourth-year students in clinics statewide to gain hands-on experience. The program will train “day-one-ready” veterinarians for diverse roles in animal care, food safety, and public health. The state-of-the-art complex near Clemson’s Equine Center will include six specialized buildings. With a class size of 80, the CVM will serve as a transformative resource for the region.
