Veterinary professionals are increasingly recognizing the need to serve not only animals, but also their human companions, as pet ownership in the U.S. continues to grow. The 2024 AVMA Pet Ownership and Demographic survey revealed that pet ownership has been steadily rising since 1991, with two-thirds of U.S. households now owning a pet. However, spending on Veterinary care per household has decreased by about 4% from the previous year, likely due to financial constraints, as a third of Americans struggle to cover unexpected $400 expenses.
To ensure pets receive necessary care without impacting Veterinary practices’ financial health, clinics are encouraged to adopt a spectrum-of-care (SOC) approach. This approach focuses on understanding barriers to care and providing flexible, accessible solutions tailored to each pet and family’s situation. The 2024 AAHA Community Care Guidelines offer detailed strategies for implementing SOC, dispelling myths and misconceptions that may hinder its adoption.
