The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences celebrated the graduation of its first VPHE-DVM cohort—four students earning both a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and a Master of Science in Veterinary Public Health & Epidemiology (VPHE). Launched in 2021, the program addresses the growing demand for veterinarians trained in both clinical care and public health. The inaugural graduates—Drs. Luke Gibson, Molly Guyette, Kaitlin Thompson, and Lindsey Walker—plan to work in small animal practice, shelter medicine, or public health.

The program allows students to complete both degrees in four years, integrating graduate coursework during summers and culminating in individualized capstone projects. Faculty mentors guided students in applying public health concepts to real-world challenges, including infectious disease management and zoonotic control. Graduates praised the program for expanding their knowledge, reducing financial strain, and opening new career paths. The dual degree equips veterinarians to serve as leaders in both local clinics and global health initiatives.
