An explosion destroyed the Eastern Carolina Veterinary Center in Wilmington, N.C., after 46-year-old Jason Lee Beach allegedly drove off the road, struck the building’s gas line, and triggered a blast. Beach faces multiple charges, including felony DWI serious injury, reckless driving, and hit-and-run, and is being held on a $100,000 bond. The center, a four-year project scheduled to open in weeks, had three construction workers inside who evacuated after smelling gas, likely preventing casualties. Administrator Gary Walker described the scene as surreal but expressed gratitude that staff and animals were not present, noting the hospital would normally house around 50 pets.
The explosion injured four firefighters, one sustaining severe burns, while nearby restaurant staff reported feeling the impact. Walker emphasized the clinic’s commitment to rebuilding and continuing to serve Wilmington’s pet owners. Police praised the coordinated emergency response, with Lt. Greg Willett commending the professionalism of Wilmington’s fire department.
