Veterinarians in Maine are seeing a rise in Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, a tick-borne disease that, while less known than Lyme disease, can be fatal in pets if left untreated. A Cape Elizabeth couple shared their experience after their 10-year-old dog, Luna, lost her vision due to the illness. While they were traveling, Luna developed eye issues that quickly worsened. After a specialist confirmed the diagnosis, Luna endured painful treatments including eye drops and a lengthy antibiotic course. Though her glaucoma has resolved, her long-term vision remains uncertain.
Transmitted by American and brown dog ticks, the disease attacks blood vessel linings, leading to internal bruising and other symptoms such as fever, joint pain, and lethargy. Early treatment is critical, as symptoms can escalate rapidly. Veterinary experts stress the importance of year-round flea and tick prevention, daily tick checks, and swift action if symptoms appear. The disease, though rare in cats, can also pose a risk to outdoor felines.
