Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine has laid off 10 employees, citing staffing adjustments as part of efforts to enhance academic programs. The layoffs, which did not affect academic leadership, come amid ongoing challenges for the institution, including probationary accreditation status from the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (COE).
The COE previously identified major deficiencies in finances, clinical resources, and outcomes assessment, which remain unresolved. Loss of accreditation could impact students’ access to federal loans. Tuskegee’s Veterinary program, established in 1945, is the only Veterinary school at an HBCU and has historically provided opportunities for Black students. Today, it trains the majority of Black veterinarians in the U.S.
Despite the challenges, Tuskegee alumni and AVMA leaders remain committed to the school’s historic mission. Meanwhile, another HBCU, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, is seeking accreditation for a new Veterinary program set to launch in 2026.
