Tuskegee University has filed a federal lawsuit and emergency motion to halt an upcoming AVMA Council on Education appeal hearing that could determine the accreditation status of its College of Veterinary Medicine, the nation’s only historically Black veterinary school. Tuskegee argues the AVMA violated due-process rights and failed to follow its own procedures during an accreditation review that placed the college on Probationary Accreditation in 2022 for deficiencies in finances, clinical resources, and outcomes assessment.
The university claims the AVMA applied standards inconsistently, citing more lenient treatment of Purdue University, and alleges procedural unfairness, including blocked expert testimony, refusal to release internal documents, limits on evidence of unequal treatment, and a restrictive 2.5-hour hearing. Losing accreditation could threaten federal aid, student recruitment, and the program’s survival. Tuskegee seeks a court injunction before the December 5 hearing to ensure a fair process while affirming that current students remain fully enrolled and on track for graduation.
