Ticks, notorious for latching onto pets and humans, carry diseases with severe consequences. Dr. Dana Kneese from Texas A&M University explains how to manage and prevent tick infestations. Ticks, part of the arachnid family, have eight legs and feed on blood. They are identifiable in their adult stage and by specific features: Brown Dog Ticks are reddish-brown, American Dog Ticks have white markings, Black-Legged (deer) Ticks are brown with dark legs, and Lone Star Ticks have a white spot on females’ backs.

Ticks can transmit diseases like Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Lyme disease. Proper removal of ticks using tweezers, not crushing or burning, is crucial to prevent disease transmission. Regular Veterinary consultations and checking pets after outdoor activities help safeguard against ticks. Awareness of tick prevalence and diseases in different regions is vital for pet health.
