Veterinarians warn that many common household cleaning products contain ingredients that can seriously harm pets through ingestion, skin contact, or inhalation. Bleach is highly corrosive and can burn a pet’s mouth, throat, and gastrointestinal tract, while fumes pose respiratory risks, especially for cats and birds. Ammonia, found in glass and floor cleaners, also produces dangerous fumes and becomes deadly when mixed with bleach.
Essential oils such as tea tree, eucalyptus, and pine (often assumed to be natural and safe) are toxic to pets; cats are particularly sensitive, and even diffusers can cause poisoning. Phenols and quaternary ammonium compounds, common in disinfectants, can trigger liver failure in cats or cause severe burns and oral irritation. If a pet is exposed, owners should remove the product, avoid inducing vomiting, and seek emergency Veterinary care. Safer cleaning alternatives include diluted white vinegar, baking soda, and dish soap. Veterinarians emphasize checking labels and keeping pets away from treated areas until fully dry.
