The American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) has introduced significant changes to streamline the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) process, enabling faster licensure for Veterinary technicians. Starting in 2025, the AAVSB will handle eligibility determinations for non-degree candidates, previously managed by individual jurisdictions. This aims to reduce the time from graduation to licensure.

Key updates include allowing students from accredited programs to take the VTNE during their final semester at their school’s discretion and enabling the AAVSB to review on-the-job-trained (OJT) candidates’ eligibility for jurisdictions that permit alternate pathways. Testing windows have increased from three to four annually, each expanded to two months, accommodating varied graduation timelines. In addition, the new open application process allows candidates to register directly with the AAVSB. Accredited schools will submit lists of eligible candidates, simplifying the application process. These changes aim to enhance efficiency, reduce administrative burdens, and help Veterinary technicians enter the workforce more quickly.
