Routine brucellosis surveillance testing in Wyoming has identified affected cattle herds in Park and Sublette Counties, confirmed by the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory and the National Veterinary Services Laboratory. These herds, located within the Brucellosis Designated Surveillance Area (DSA), have been quarantined, bringing the total to three herds in Park and one in Sublette County under quarantine. Affected herds are undergoing serial testing to meet quarantine release requirements.
Brucellosis cases in Wyoming’s DSA are not uncommon due to wildlife transmission. Surveillance measures require testing before cattle leave the DSA or change ownership. Electronic identification (EID) eartags are used for accurate disease tracking, enhancing efficiency and traceability.
Dr. Teckla Webb of the Wyoming Livestock Board acknowledges the cooperation of producers and veterinarians in mitigating brucellosis. Wyoming’s comprehensive program includes mandatory vaccinations for heifers, ensuring continued disease control and preserving the state’s brucellosis-free status. Collaboration with wildlife agencies strengthens surveillance efforts.
