A 34-year-old chimpanzee named Mwelu at Zoo Knoxville is recovering after undergoing a groundbreaking spinal surgery to remove a tumor, the first documented procedure of its kind on a chimpanzee. The complex operation, performed on September 19 at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, was a collaboration between veterinary neurologist Dr. Talisha Moore and human neurosurgeon Dr. James A. Killeffer
After Mwelu showed weakness in his hind legs, imaging revealed a tumor pressing against his spinal cord. The surgical team successfully removed most of the tumor, relieving pressure and improving his mobility. Dr. Killeffer noted the operation’s unprecedented nature and its potential to advance both human and veterinary medicine. Mwelu is now recovering in a dedicated care area, closely monitored by zoo staff, and showing encouraging signs of improvement while receiving special care and attention from his keepers.
