There are ongoing gender disparities in Veterinary medicine despite the predominance of women in the field. While 87.3% of current Veterinary school applicants and 88% of Veterinary technicians are female, there remains a lack of gender equality in leadership positions and pay. Female veterinarians face challenges such as the gender pay gap, academic achievement gaps, and the “motherhood penalty,” where mothers earn less due to career interruptions.
Although median incomes for both genders have increased, the gender pay gap persists, with female specialists earning 25%-29% less in private practice. In addition, practice ownership, linked to higher earnings, is shifting towards more female ownership. However, private practice ownership is declining overall, with corporations dominating the market. The article urges reflection on systemic biases and encourages action to address gender inequalities in the profession.
