Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been found in dairy cows across eight states, leading to movement restrictions and increased testing. The USDA confirmed cases in North Carolina, South Dakota, and Michigan, with a total of 28 dairy herds affected. The origin of the outbreak is believed to be wild birds, with infected cows showing symptoms after contact with affected herds.
Some states, like Pennsylvania and West Virginia, have issued quarantine orders and testing requirements for incoming cattle. HPAI isn’t fatal in cows but causes symptoms like decreased milk production and fever. While pasteurization ensures milk safety, producers are advised to maintain biosecurity measures and contact veterinarians for unusual symptoms. The FDA warns against selling products from sick cows, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures and updates from agricultural authorities.
