A recent study published in Science Advances found that a genetic mutation in Labrador and flat-coated retrievers predispose them to obesity. The mutation affects the leptin-melanocortin pathway, leading to increased hunger and lower resting metabolic rates.

Researchers conducted experiments on affected dogs, revealing heightened food motivation and a lower metabolic rate. The POMC mutation, present in 12% of Labradors and 60% of flat-coated retrievers, explains their higher obesity risk. Genetic testing and tailored diet plans are recommended to manage weight in these breeds.
