Four members of the Texas A&M Veterinary Emergency Team (VET) and four future Aggie veterinarians have deployed to East Texas to respond to severe river flooding affecting thousands. The team provides Veterinary care to animals at a local emergency shelter, treating 39 dogs and 13 cats. Dr. Deb Zoran, VET director, emphasized the critical role of animal shelters in disaster recovery, facilitating reunions between families and their pets. The VET rotation regularly assists counties in developing emergency animal shelter plans for various hazards, ensuring preparedness for events like flooding.
Flood-related disasters necessitate specific responses, including decontamination of animals exposed to polluted floodwaters. The VET has established protocols for such decontamination to protect animals and their caregivers. Zoran highlighted the comfort provided to disaster-affected people by the safe care of their animals and expressed gratitude for donor support enabling these vital efforts. The VET team includes faculty, staff, students, and volunteers, making it the largest and most sophisticated of its kind in the nation.
