The American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS) has received a proposal to establish a “clinical wildlife practice” specialty under the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. Public comments on the proposal are invited until July 31, 2024, to assess its distinctiveness and public need. Clinical Wildlife Practice (CWP) focuses on wildlife in temporary captivity and intersects human and wildlife health, differing from exotic pet, zoological, and wildlife population medicine.
The proposed specialty aims to enhance Veterinary services by identifying qualified veterinarians, supporting wildlife medicine research, and providing continuous education. CWP covers a broad range of wildlife, including those affected by human interaction, disasters, and environmental changes, ensuring they can return to their natural habitats. Over 500,000 wild animals in the U.S. are treated annually, necessitating specialized Veterinary care. The new specialty would help identify veterinarians capable of providing the best care for rehabilitated wildlife, aligning with regulatory requirements.
