Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming various fields, including Veterinary medicine. At the forefront, Johns Hopkins University’s Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot (STAR) successfully performed laparoscopic surgery on pigs, demonstrating AI’s potential in healthcare. Veterinarians are increasingly adopting AI tools, particularly for diagnostic imaging and medical record management. A survey by Digitail and the American Animal Hospital Association found that nearly 30% of veterinarians use AI regularly, despite concerns over reliability, accuracy, and data security.

Cornell University’s first Symposium on Artificial Intelligence in Veterinary Medicine showcased AI projects, such as early lameness detection in sheep, Lyme disease forecasting, and rapid diagnosis of canine heart disease. AI tools like RenalTech predict chronic kidney disease in cats, while startups like ImpriMed personalize cancer treatments for dogs. In addition, AI aids farm efficiency and disease outbreak prediction. The AVMA’s Task Force on Emerging Technologies aims to support practitioners in implementing these innovations safely.
