Shola, an English Shepherd and former member of the Edale Mountain Rescue Team, was forced to retire due to progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), a genetic disease causing blindness. However, new research from the University of Cambridge has led to a gene test that could prevent PRA in future generations. Dr. Katherine Stanbury’s team identified the specific gene causing PRA by analyzing DNA from affected and unaffected English Shepherds.
This gene test, a simple mouth swab, helps breeders avoid producing puppies with PRA. Since the gene is recessive, both parents must carry it for puppies to be affected. The test is affordable and offers breeders reassurance about their puppies’ health. The research may also provide insights into retinitis pigmentosa, a similar human eye disease. Although Shola is blind, her PRA-free daughters are active in rescue missions, continuing her legacy.
