At the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society in West Palm Beach, Florida, staff use creative methods to keep animals cool during the hot summer. With temperatures reaching the upper 90s Fahrenheit and high humidity, the zoo provides ice and frozen treats to help animals beat the heat. Black bears receive piles of ice to roll in and a chilled pool, while otters play with ice blocks and frozen fish.
Malayan tigers enjoy frozen cow bones and goat milk encased in ice, and also swim to stay cool. Giant tortoises benefit from cool showers sprayed through hoses. Despite being acclimatized to South Florida’s climate, the animals appreciate these cooling activities, which zookeepers determine through trial and error. Visitors, especially children, enjoy watching the animals interact with these cooling treats, pressing their faces against the glass for a closer view.
