Since the H5N1 avian influenza virus appeared in U.S. dairy cattle in March, Colorado has mandated weekly milk sample testing from dairy farms to control the outbreak. This decision, effective from July 22, comes as Colorado reports the highest number of infected herds, with 51 out of 172 nationwide. The state uses an existing system to test for the virus, offering the service free of charge and placing affected farms under quarantine until they test negative.
The mandate was prompted by a spillover into a poultry flock and aims to protect both poultry and dairy industries. Despite concerns about industry pushback, Colorado’s dairy sector supported the initiative. Early detection through milk testing can provide crucial time for farms to manage outbreaks and prevent spread. Colorado’s proactive approach may set a precedent for other states to follow in combating the virus.
