The Kays Foundation has pledged $534,000 for an endowment to support the Arkansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, officials announced. The endowment, to be completed over ten years, will fund unbudgeted instructional materials, with the first installment already made. The funds, generated from the endowment’s interest, will help purchase clinical and surgical training models, allowing students to gain confidence and competence before treating real patients, according to Dr. Heidi Banse, dean of the College.
Arkansas State University aims to admit its first Veterinary students in 2026, filling a gap in Arkansas, which currently lacks a Veterinary school. Lyon College, a private institution in Batesville, also plans to open a Veterinary school, with its inaugural class expected in the fall of 2025. Founded in 1911, the Kays Foundation supports the advancement of higher education in Arkansas and is named after V.C. Kays, the founding president of Arkansas State University.
