The BC SPCA is facing increased demand for specialized pet food at its animal centres and through its pet food bank partners. Specialized diets, essential for pets with medical conditions like allergies or kidney disease, are costly and less likely to be donated, straining the organization’s budget. Diane Waters, BC SPCA outreach specialist, and Rachel Groarke, shelter medicine manager, emphasized the critical role these diets play in maintaining animal health and preventing costly Veterinary interventions. Waters shared a success story of a pet owner using the food bank to access urinary care food for her cat, avoiding health complications and keeping her pet at home.
To meet the growing need, the BC SPCA collaborates with food banks and accepts donations of unopened pet food and cash. Donations are currently being tripled, up to $40,000, thanks to the Goudge Family Foundation and an anonymous donor, providing crucial support for pet guardians in financial need.
