Cornell Equine, launched in late 2024, is a university-wide initiative uniting equine experts from Cornell’s College of Veterinary MedicineCollege of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Athletics. Directed by Dr. Mandi de Mestre, the program aims to enhance horse health and education through collaboration, research, and outreach. Unique in its cross-campus and community-connected approach, Cornell Equine partners with Cornell Cooperative Extension to engage horse owners and future equine professionals.
The initiative builds on Cornell’s legacy of excellence in equine care, supported by state-of-the-art facilities like the Cornell University Hospital for Animals and Equine Park. It also facilitates mentorship, starting with high school students, to address Veterinary workforce shortages. The program promotes multidisciplinary research, including genome studies and disease prevention, many with human health implications. Through active public engagement and collaboration, Cornell Equine strives to advance equine well-being, attract and support professionals, and strengthen the global equine community.
