In June 2023, a tragic incident occurred at Lincoln Road Veterinary Clinic in Grants Pass, Oregon, when a one-year-old corgi named Alvin died during a routine neutering procedure. Veterinarian Russel Codd discovered Alvin had no heartbeat near the end of the surgery and was unable to resuscitate him. It was later revealed that the oxygen supply had not been turned on, a critical oversight.
Alvin’s owners, Eric Sloate and Barbara Ferrante, were devastated, particularly as Alvin had been a gift to help Ferrante cope with the loss of a loved one. They claim they were initially misled about the cause of Alvin’s death, being told the oxygen machine had failed rather than human error being involved. Codd was fined $3,250 by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board, and his assistant, Jennifer Noble, was fined $500. Ferrante criticized the board’s handling of the case, expressing that more accountability was necessary.
