Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has launched the Rural Veterinarian Grant Program to address the shortage of production animal veterinarians in rural areas. Administered by the Nebraska Department of Labor, the program offers $150,000 grants to recent Veterinary graduates or practicing veterinarians who commit to eight years of service in a rural Nebraska clinic, where at least 80% of work focuses on production animals. Up to 13 recipients will be selected based on qualifications, experience, and dedication to rural practice.
This program complements the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Elite 11 Veterinary Program, introduced last year, which provides scholarships and hands-on training to Veterinary students focused on large animal care. The two initiatives aim to bolster Nebraska’s agricultural industry, enhance animal welfare, and prepare for potential animal disease outbreaks. Leaders from the Nebraska State Dairy Association and UNL praised the programs as essential steps to strengthen the Veterinary workforce and support rural communities.
