Dr. Dean Hendrickson, a renowned equine surgeon and professor in Colorado State University’s Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program, has been honored with the 2024 Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award from the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges, presented by Zoetis. With over 31 years at CSU, Hendrickson is celebrated for his excellence in research, clinical practice, and innovative teaching. He is best known for co-inventing lifelike surgical training models, now widely used through his startup, SurgiReal.
These models have transformed Veterinary education by replacing outdated methods with realistic, reusable tools. Hendrickson’s teaching philosophy centers on respecting individual learners and prioritizing student growth. He has also brought real-world experience into the classroom, performing surgeries on animals ranging from horses to giraffes and beluga whales. His impact has helped elevate CSU’s Veterinary program to a top national ranking. Colleagues and students alike commend his dedication, innovation, and lifelong passion for Veterinary education and mentorship.
