A 302-pound loggerhead sea turtle named Pennywise, injured by a boat off Florida’s Atlantic coast, was taken to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for treatment. However, her massive size prevented the use of standard CT scan equipment. After a failed attempt at a human medical center, veterinarians transported her to the Palm Beach Equine Clinic, where horse-sized equipment successfully scanned her.
The scan not only helped assess her injuries but also revealed a surprise—Pennywise is carrying eggs. Dr. Heather Barron, the center’s chief science officer, expressed hope that Pennywise will recover quickly and return to the wild in time to lay them. The innovative collaboration across medical facilities highlights the unique challenges of treating large marine animals and the dedication of Veterinary professionals to wildlife conservation. Pennywise’s story has brought attention to both the dangers marine life face from human activity and the efforts to ensure their survival.
