Foxtail grass, a summertime hazard for dogs, is a growing concern for pet owners in Edmonton, especially around dog parks and ravines. The grass’s sharp barbs can latch onto a dog’s fur and burrow into their skin or mucous membranes, potentially causing serious health issues if inhaled or swallowed. Veterinarian Robyn Geers explains that symptoms include sneezing, nasal discharge, face pawing, and even infections requiring sedation and antibiotics.
Some foxtails can migrate into the lungs, making treatment more complex and costly. According to Trupanion, pet insurance claims for foxtail-related injuries in Canada spike over 450% in summer, with Alberta accounting for about half of those cases. The average treatment cost is just under $500. Geers advises pet owners to thoroughly brush their dogs after walks and avoid areas where foxtail grass is common. Being proactive can help prevent distressing and expensive vet visits, ensuring a safer summer for dogs and their families.
