Aalborg Zoo in Denmark has sparked debate after asking pet owners to donate healthy animals—including chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, and even horses—to be humanely euthanised and fed to its predators, such as the European lynx. The zoo says the initiative aims to mimic natural diets, promote animal welfare, and ensure “nothing goes to waste.” Healthy pets in need of being put down for various reasons would be killed by trained staff and used as whole prey, replicating what predators would hunt in the wild.
The zoo also accepts horses, provided they have a valid passport, and offers potential tax deductions based on the animal’s weight. Aalborg says its needs vary seasonally, with possible waiting lists for donations. While some supporters view it as a practical, ethical use of surplus animals, others have condemned the request as disturbing. The zoo insists the scheme benefits predator health and preserves professional integrity.
