A recent consumer alert warns pet owners about misleading emails claiming their pet’s microchip registration has expired and must be renewed for a fee. Microchips, implanted under a pet’s skin, store owner contact information and are designed to last a lifetime, according to McKenzie Palmer of the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri. They do not expire, and owners typically only need to update their contact details if they move or change phone numbers.
The emails in question come from Petchip.Network, which has received numerous negative reviews and was previously ruled misleading by U.K. regulators for implying official approval. While the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) notes that some companies do legitimately charge annual fees for services, free options also exist, including AAHA’s own consolidated chip database. Veterinarians often help owners confirm and update registration during routine visits. Petchip.Network has not responded to requests for comment, raising further concerns about its practices.
