The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) celebrated a major milestone in May 2025 as the first cohort of 2+2 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students graduated from the Veterinary Education, Research & Outreach (VERO) campus in Canyon, Texas. Launched in 2021 in partnership with West Texas A&M University, the program expands Veterinary education in the Panhandle, offering students close interaction with faculty, small class sizes, and hands-on experience with large animal medicine in a region housing a third of the nation’s fed beef cattle.
Students in the program matched or exceeded national academic benchmarks, reflecting its success. Graduates, including Drs. Alexa Mendoza, Park Phillips, Christina Edlebeck, and Hannah Garthwaite, are beginning careers in fields ranging from equine surgery to rural community practice. Many highlight VERO’s close-knit, supportive environment as foundational to their growth. With growing interest each year, the program is strengthening Veterinary capacity for underserved regions.
